A Career Decision That Changed My Life
Hello, everyone! My name is Jasil, and I am currently working as a digital marketer. My career journey has taught me an important lesson: in a rapidly changing world, we must be ready to learn, adapt, and grow.
Two years ago, I was working in a corporate job as a medical coder. At that time, I began thinking about the future of my profession and how technological advancements, especially Artificial Intelligence (AI), could change the way people work. Those thoughts encouraged me to explore new opportunities and eventually led me to digital marketing.
Looking back, changing my career path was an important decision that helped me discover new possibilities.
My Experience as a Medical Coder
Before entering digital marketing, I worked as a medical coder in the healthcare industry. Medical coding requires accuracy, attention to detail, and a good understanding of medical terminology and coding guidelines.
Although it was a corporate job, I started thinking about how the industry might evolve in the coming years. Artificial Intelligence was advancing rapidly, and I realised that automation could potentially transform many routine tasks involved in medical coding.
I began asking myself some important questions:
What will happen to my career as AI technology develops? Will the demand for traditional medical coding skills change? Should I continue in the same field or prepare myself for new opportunities? What skills should I learn to remain relevant in the future?
I understood that I couldn’t predict exactly what would happen to my profession. However, I could take steps to prepare myself for change rather than wait for it to happen.
Why I Decided to Switch to Digital Marketing
After thinking about my career and future opportunities, I decided to explore digital marketing.
Digital marketing attracted me because it combines creativity, technology, communication, strategy, and data analysis. It also offers opportunities to work with different businesses, develop new skills, and explore freelance projects.
Another important factor was the flexibility of the field. Unlike a career limited to a traditional office environment, digital marketing can offer opportunities to work remotely, collaborate with clients, and build an independent professional career.
I saw this as an opportunity to move beyond my comfort zone, learn something new, and prepare myself for the changing digital world.
Making a career change was not simply about leaving my previous job. It was about finding a field that offered different ways to learn, grow, and build my future.
AI: A Threat or an Opportunity?
One of the biggest reasons I reconsidered my career was the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence.
AI is now reshaping the way many industries operate. It can automate repetitive tasks, analyse large amounts of information, and help people complete certain activities more efficiently.
However, I gradually realised that AI does not have to be viewed only as a threat. When we understand how to use it properly, AI can become a valuable support in our work.
This is especially relevant in digital marketing. AI can help digital marketers generate content ideas, conduct research, analyse data, create initial drafts, plan campaigns, and improve productivity. These capabilities can save time and allow marketers to focus more on strategy, creativity, customer needs, and decision-making.
Of course, AI also creates challenges. Some marketing tasks are becoming easier to automate, and professionals need to keep updating their skills. AI generated content still requires human review, fact checking, originality, and an understanding of the target audience.
The key lesson for me is simple: instead of competing against AI in everything, we should learn how to use AI to improve the way we work.
How I Use AI in Digital Marketing
One of the things I appreciate about digital marketing is the opportunity to use AI as part of my daily work and projects.
Rather than seeing AI as something that could take away every opportunity, I see it as a tool that can support my work.
AI can help with content planning, research, drafting and structuring content, brainstorming social media captions and content calendars, interpreting campaign information, and reducing time spent on repetitive tasks.
However, using AI alone is not enough to become a successful digital marketer. We also need to understand marketing fundamentals, customer behaviour, branding, communication, analytics, and business objectives.
AI can provide assistance, but we still need to evaluate its output and make informed decisions. I believe that professionals who combine practical marketing knowledge with effective AI usage can create valuable opportunities for themselves.
The Freedom and Opportunities of Freelancing
Another reason I chose digital marketing is the possibility of working as a freelancer.
Freelancing provides an opportunity to work with different clients, manage projects, and build professional relationships beyond a single company.
Depending on our skills and experience, we can offer services such as social media management, content marketing, search engine optimisation (SEO), email marketing, paid advertising, and website content development.
Freelancing also offers flexibility in how we organise our work. However, it requires discipline, consistent learning, client communication, time management, and the ability to find and retain clients.
I understand that building a successful freelance career takes time. It requires practical experience, a strong portfolio, trust, and continuous improvement.
For me, freelancing represents more than just flexibility. It is an opportunity to take greater responsibility for my professional growth.
The Importance of Continuous Learning
My career transition has taught me that learning should never stop.
The digital world changes quickly. New technologies, platforms, tools, and marketing strategies emerge regularly. A skill that is valuable today may need to be updated tomorrow.
That is why I believe professionals should invest in learning continuously. We should not depend entirely on the knowledge we gained from our education or previous jobs. Instead, we should remain curious, explore new tools, practise our skills, and adapt to industry changes.
Whether we work in healthcare, technology, marketing, finance, or any other industry, understanding how AI affects our profession can help us make better career decisions.
Every new technology does not have to be a reason for fear. Instead, we should understand it, identify how it affects our work, and learn how to use it to our advantage.
A Message for Anyone Thinking About a Career Change
If you are thinking about changing your career because of technological advancements, I want to share one thought with you: do not make decisions based only on fear.
Take the time to understand your current industry, research emerging opportunities, and identify the skills you need to develop.
A career change may feel uncomfortable, especially when you have already invested time and effort in another profession. It is normal to question whether you are choosing the right path. That is natural.
Before making a major change, consider your interests, financial responsibilities, existing skills, and the realities of your chosen field. Learn the fundamentals, gain practical experience, and create a plan for your transition.
You do not necessarily have to abandon your current profession. Sometimes, learning new technologies and combining them with your existing expertise can open new opportunities.
The important thing is to remain adaptable and take responsibility for your own growth.
Adapt, Learn, and Grow
My journey from medical coding to digital marketing has changed the way I think about my career and the future of work.
Two years ago, I began questioning whether my original career path would offer the opportunities I wanted as AI technology continued to advance. That question encouraged me to explore a new field, develop new skills, and move towards digital marketing.
Today, I see AI not only as a technology that can transform jobs but also as a tool that can help me work smarter, improve productivity, and explore new opportunities.
I know that digital marketing also faces changes because of AI. No career is completely free from technological disruption. That is why I believe the real advantage comes from continuous learning, adaptability, creativity, and the ability to use technology wisely.
My journey is a reminder that sometimes, preparing for the future means having the courage to change direction.
The future belongs not necessarily to those who know everything today, but to those who are willing to learn, adapt, and grow tomorrow.
I appreciate you taking the time to read about my journey.
